Conasbrancas, Fedellos do Couto , Ribeira Sacra 2014

21.00

We're very excited to be the first merchant to offer the first white wine from Fedellos do Couto, a blend of Dona Blanca, Godello, Albariño, Treixadura, Lado and Torrontes. It's not a wine that will have Jilly Goolden reaching for superlatives, because there's no "whoosh of hollyhocks" on first opening, and it's slow to reveal its true colours, but if you let it come to you in its own time you will be richly rewarded. The fruit was all hand harvested and fermentation was initiated by wild yeasts in tank, where it underwent 28 days of skin contact before spending 12 months in 500 litre French oak barrels on its lees with no battonage. Drink now-2020. A white wine that benefits from decanting.

Press reviews

The Wine Advocate: "The white 2014 Conasbrancas is a field blend of local varieties, Dona Blanca, Godello, Albariño, Treixadura, Lado and Torrontés from the exact same vineyards in the Bibei valley that produce the red Lomba dos Ares. In fact, the name means 'with the whites' in Gallego language, so simply produced with the white grapes found intermixed with the reds in their old vineyards. The hand harvested grapes fermented in plastic bins (full clusters) and in barrique with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured in used 300- and 500-litre French oak barrels with lees and no bâttonage for eight months. It has a golden colour as is usually the case for whites that have been fermented with the skins (without excess); there's also an earthy touch, not a lot of fruit (some quince?), but perhaps a little spicy, waxy with hints of pollen and beeswax. It has a strong personality and it might not please everyone. The palate is a lot fresher and lighter than I expected, with vibrant acidity and a long, mineral aftertaste. It improves and gets more focused in the glass, developing more floral aromas. This is an impressive debut. 1,500 bottles produced." 91 points

Jancis Robinson: "Soft, dry, saline and tight. Easygoing but not underpowered." 16 points
