Dog Point 'Section 94' Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough 2015

It's Sauvignon Blanc, Jim, but not as we know it. We need to take this back to The Enterprise for analysis. Beam us up Scotty!

If you are already a happy convert to barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc, then this paragraph is redundant, but if not, we should stress that this is not your typical Marlborough Savvy. The pressed juice is put into barrels and the fermentation takes place in oak, which performs a mysterious alchemy on the wine, enriching it both in flavour and in texture. The herbaceous side of Sauvignon Blanc is subdued and its signature gooseberry and elderberry flavours are mollified by a creaminess that cools the tartness of the fruit. There's a clearly defined 'struck flint' character, similar to that which you find in many white Burgundies, but this has more in common with serious white Bordeaux in both taste and structure.

It's hard to ignore a wine with this much personality, so you can either embrace it or turn your nose up at its impudent braggadocio. No prizes for guessing what we suggest. Drink now-2022. 13.5% alc.

Press reviews:

Jancis Robinson MW: "Smells as though there is some light oak influence here. Dense and thrilling. This is a wine to convert me to Marlborough Sauvignon! Much more concentrated than the regular 2017 Sauvignon Blanc. Tense and rich at the same time but not particularly mineral. Reminds me a  bit of PHI in the Yarra Valley. Impressively long.  ." 17.5 points

The Wine Advocate: "Whole-bunch pressed and wild fermented in oak, the 2015 Section 94 is still in a bit of youthful funk. Hints of green onion and sweat appear on the nose, but the flavors are settling into a comfortable range of stone fruit, melon and pink grapefruit. It's medium to full-bodied, with a rich, almost creamy texture and a long, plush finish. Give it another year or two and drink it over the next 5-6." 93 points
