We love finding wines that don't know how good they are and this is a classic example, one of the finest Chardonnays for the price that money can buy. It's made by Johan 'Stompie' Meyer and has little details of flavour that elevate it beyond the everyday, like the tweezered micro-herbs and edible flowers that make the difference between a homely dish and a Michelin Star. It's taut and exciting, picking up some mineral inflections from the shale soil with a glacial purity to the white-fleshed fruits and hints of lime blossom and cordite to add intrigue. Unfined, unfiltered. Aged in 500 litre barrels. 13% alc. Drink now- 2022.

Press reviews:

Jancis Robinson.com:
"Light on the nose, some citrus and green fruits and a touch of lanolin, rocks. Then kerpow – so much power and depth on the palate and great length, the intensity runs to the finish but it’s still fresh. Mouth-watering. (JH) 13% alc. Drink now-2022," 17 points

The Wine Advocate: "2016 Palmiet Chardonnay was matured in 500-litre barrels for 10-12 months. It has a light, rather resinous bouquet with waxy, Jasmine aromas, quite earthy in character. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, a fine mineral tension here with a precise, grapefruit and dried pineapple-tinged nose. Enjoy this over the next 3-5 years." 90 points

Jancis Robinson (Tamlyn Currin): “Pretty closed on the nose. Starts quietly, without fuss, a little ordinary. And then, it starts to build. Tarragon. Then apricot. Then cardamom. Spices. Deep intense citrus. And suddenly you've got a wine that's full of power and a complexity that both drills down and is layered across and drives through and long and on and on. Not ordinary at all. Drink 2018-2024” 17 points
