Matthew Van Heerden 'Signature Wines' Chardonnay, Western Cape 2014

"Oh, that's lovely. That's first class. That is superb. Ooh, there you go, it's all happening!" OK, so maybe those are the words of Alan Partridge, in reference to a wholly different carnal pleasure. but they perfectly echo our feelings when first tasting this wine.

Only 12 barrels were made of this stunning Western Cape Chardonnay, made by Matthew van Heerden, the genius responsible for South Africa's highest-scoring Chardonnay, Uva Mira. It is such a joy to drink that it can only have been made by someone with a serious mind. Intensely rich yet thrillingly racy, it carries its wonderful flavours of toast, lime and apricot on a creamily textured palate. On first opening, it's just beautifully silky and luscious, but as it sits in the glass it really goes through the gears and turns into something that could share the table with some of the New World's finest Chardonnays. 13% alc. Drink now-2018.
