Boulevard Napoleon Grenache Gris, Vin de Pays L'Herault 2015

Unless you experience synesthesia, you can't taste colour, but there's something about the limpid, silvery hue of this wine, with its flecks of green glinting at the rim, that suggest crispness and minerality and, sure enough, it's a precursor to what lies ahead. In the glass it offers impressions of white-fleshed fruits, a little creaminess from the oak. There's a chalky mineral seam running through it that gives it a sense of place and aggrandises the fruit in the same way that the flinty bite of a good Chablis or the slate cool of a fine Mosel Riesling can do. It's one of the most serious whites to be found in the Languedoc, a barrel-fermented Grenache Gris. One year on the lees with no batonage. 14.5% alc. Drink now-2021.

Press review:

The Wine Advocate: “Delicately toasty, the 2015 Grenache Gris Sec also delivers fine scents of pear and tangerine. More impressive is the fabulously silky texture, cascading in waves over the medium-bodied palate and coming to a long, finely focused finish. It's a terrific effort that should help bring more notoriety to this unheralded grape variety.” 93 points

Jancis Robinson MW: "Big, bold and rich. A little less tense than the 2013 but much more intense than the 2014. Tingly, very mineral, very long and overall built a bit like a really satisfying Meursault but with more stoniness. Drink now-2022" 17 points

Jancis Robinson (Tamlyn Currin):
“Rich and voluminous. Oaky vanilla sweetness at the moment still layered over the fabulous acidity and length, but the framework is beautifully there and a long slipstone of grapefruit-pith bitterness running through the palate. I'd give it another year to let it mesh. Drink 2019-2025” 16.5++ points

“A lovely example of how suited Grenache Gris is to the Languedoc, and an argument for separating its identity from Grenache Blanc (the former often being more distinguished). Textured with ripe fruit and good acidity. Drink now-2022.” 92 points

Customer comments:

"This is sooooo interesting. It kinda of feels fat and minerally at the same time. Full of fruit almost sweet but bone dry. Fascinating. Do you happen to have 6 more for me?" - Ms. N.P.
