It’s impossible for us to visit Burgundy without making a pilgrimage east to the green, rolling hills of the Jura, especially when wines like this are waiting for us. It was the very first wine we tasted at Stéphane Tissot’s place in Arbois and nothing that came after improved upon it, which is quite impressive if you look at the success rate of acts on talent shows who perform first. It’s a wine that lit our palate up like a multiball session on a pinball machine. It really makes you sit up and take notice, thanks to the sheer intensity and energy of the fruit. Like all of Tissot’s whites, it is aged sous voile (a thin veil of yeast), but the effect is only light, nothing like as intense as in a vin jaune, for example, and merely makes a contribution to all the other flavour complexities of preserved lemon, buttered toast, smokey tea, ground almonds and cold chalk. If you are a Jura fanatic, but find that your proselytising has fallen on deaf ears, then here’s the bible to bash people with. 13.5% alc. Drink now-2026.
