NEW! Chris and Suzaan Alheit 'Cartology', Western Cape, South Africa 2017

We are offering this wine on a 'first-come, first-served' basis, which, when you think about it, is nothing more than the usual terms of engagement between customer and supplier. In fact, supermarket checkout queues would be pandemonium if any other system were in place. The point I was trying to make, before you so rudely interrupted, is that our allocation is tiny, so don't dilly dally.

Chris Alheit said that “if you don’t like this then I give up” and it’s fair comment. This is the best Cartology he has made so far and, having been lucky enough to attend a vertical tasting of every vintage since its debut in 2011, we can safely say that it’s a wine that will age beautifully for at least a decade. The Chenin Blanc component (representing 89% of the blend) comes from a widespread patchwork of parcels in the Skurfberg, Tygerberg and Paardeberg, as well as Bottelary, Stellenbosch, Piekenierskloof, False Bay and Botrivier and the Semillon comes from the old La Colline block in Franschhoek. You pick up a lot of minerality and stony crunch on the nose, with impressions of crushed chalk and broken clay, leading to succulent stone fruit and quince flavours on the palate and a delicate hint of frangipane. This is an intense and striking wine that is rightfully held up as one of the most important pieces in the Cape's 'old vine' jigsaw. 13.5% alc. Drink now-2030.

Press Reviews:

Jancis Robinson: “Zesty orange and citrus nose. Tight and tangy with real tension as well as that amazing depth and richness on the mid palate without any heaviness. Long and tangy with a slightly grainy texture that adds freshness and length. A lovely almost imperceptible chew on the finish. Drink 2019-2031.” 17.5+ points

Tim Atkin MW: “Chris Alheit’s “vinous exploration of Cape heritage” continues to delight. Now in its seventh vintage, it’s a cuvée of Chenin and 11% Semillon sourced from ten sites. Waxy, spicy and complete, it has leesy intensity, notes of hay and aromatic herbs and tangy, green apple acidity. 2019-2027.” 94 points
