Fascinating, unusual and perplexing, perhaps, but downright delicious too. This is a wine to show anyone with a little curiosity for the esoteric in their veins. The grapes are grown on a volcanic island in the Atlantic Ocean and the wine has all the mineral, saline, marine qualities that you might expect, but the fruit is there in full ripeness too, so it's a wonderful cymbal crash of flavours, showing bitter lemon, grapefruit, sour mash, wet stones, star fruit and green melon. Drink now-2020.

Press reviews:

Jamie Goode: "This is Listan Blanco (Palomino) from 1000 m. Complex nutty pear and citrus nose with some waxy hints. Lively and nutty and textural on the palate with lemons, herbs and fine spices. Tangy and complex." 94 points

The Wine Advocate: "The white 2016 Benje is produced from Listan Blanco (Palomino) grapes from the Santiago del Teide zone where the grapes for the red Benje are also obtained. They now work with many more growers there, in more different zones and altitudes, and they have more grapes of both colours. This zone is not affected by the Alisios winds that are present in the other zones of Tenerife—Taganana and La Orotava— where they also work. 2016 saw a mild summer that resulted in lower alcohol and good acidity. The different plots are fermented separately and in different ways, mostly in concrete vats but with some 20% each in well-seasoned 228-litre barriques and with skins in plastic bins. Sixty percent of the volume was kept in concrete and the rest in neutral 228-litre barrels for nine months. There is no oak anywhere, and the wine is more continental and rounder than the ones from Taganana, without the verticality of the zone and the grape blend. It's interesting to compare it with the Palo Blanco from La Orotava, which is halfway between this and the Táganan. This is easier, more approachable and from a warmer zone." 90 points
