Imagine being a winemaker in Puligny-Montrachet. You bounce out of bed every morning full of exciting ideas, but then you remember that you’re only allowed to use Chardonnay. A little part of you must long to work in other places, where you can let your creativity run riot. This stylish and elegant Italian white is a blend of Vespaiolo and Garganega, which would appear to be very comfortable bedfellows on the evidence of this. The two grapes are vinified and matured separately, the Garganega spending 12 months in oak barrels, while the Vespaiolo is aged in stainless steel.

It has the cutting, mineral edge that foodies love, because it brings a little dash to dishes without the sharpness of acidity. It has the wild aromas of a ‘natural wine’ without bringing all the funky baggage. It has the struck match and Frazzles notes of great white Burgundy. In fact it’s a wine that any winemaker in Puligny-Montrachet would proudly put their name to. It’s a maelstrom of energy, with a bright core of apples, lemons and frosty, winter fruits and a nervy acidity that drives the flavours across the palate and prepares the you for your next sip… which won’t be long in coming. This is one of the most beautiful and thrilling Italian whites we have tasted. Only 800 bottles are made. 13.5% alc. Drink now – 2022.
