If you thought Vermentino was just a backing singer, then this wine will spin you around and make you walk back over all your preconceptions (to be honest, Vermentino is usually just a backing singer, but let’s not dwell on that and spoil the momentum of a good metaphor). In this rendition by the Koerner brothers, it’s been given full use of the studio and it has taken full advantage of all the knobs and dials, cranking up the complexity with a bit of skin contact, some ageing in a large foudres as well as 2nd year French oak and stainless steel. It’s given Vermentino (or ‘Rolle’ as it’s known in the South of France) a voice that we haven’t heard before and we like it! There’s a warmth and a depth to it, with layers of nutty intrigue that conjure thoughts of the Jura, as well as some flinty notes that evoke white Burgundy and a cuddly fullness akin to a Californian Chardonnay, making it a fantastic wine to enjoy with bold-flavoured dishes. It manages all this yet still retains a relatively modest 11.9% alc. Drink now-2022.

Jancis Robinson: “Green-fruited and cedary with a lovely creamy texture. Lightly aromatic but rich and intense. A big wine. (JH). 11.9% alc. Drink now-2021.” 16.5 points
