Saint Aubin Premier Cru 'Les Charmois' Paul Pillot, Burgundy 2017

44.00

One of our favourite white wines at the 2017 'en primeur' tastings. It's bristling and crackling with so much mineral tension that it feels as if it's short-circuiting on your palate, The fruit feels charged with energy., full of concentration, but precision too. A very focused and chiselled white Burgundy with just a brush of buttered toast to mollify the minerality.

Press reviews:

The Wine Advocate: “The 2017 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Charmois bursts with pretty aromas of green orchard fruit, fresh peaches and a light touch of smoky reduction. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and succulent, with an open-knit, fresh but sun-kissed profile. The 12-hectare Domaine Paul Pillot, today one of the finest addresses in the Côte de Beaune, has been directed since 2004 by the young and dynamic Thierry Pillot. The vines in their enviable palette of holdings are farmed organically, though not yet certified as such, and the wines they produce are matured for some 18 months on the lees, the final six being spent in stainless steel. Percentages of new wood are modest, with plenty of larger format 350-litre barrels, and the lees are never stirred. Characterful, elegantly textural and mouthwateringly incisive, these are superb white Burgundies, and to my mind, Pillot is one of a handful of exciting producers who win Chassagne-Montrachet the title of Burgundy's most interesting white wine producing village today. That he stills flies somewhat under the radar—at least relative to the quality to be found here—is perplexing. What's more, that's bound to change, and sooner rather than later, so readers shouldn't hesitate to buy whatever bottles they can find.“ (89-91) points

Jancis Robinson: “Bright citrus with just a hint of struck match. Lovely gentle, toasty creaminess but it's the citrus intensity that shines. Lovely persistent and pure wine and a good price. Drink 2021-2027." 16.5 points

Vinous: “The 2017 Saint-Aubin Les Charmois 1er Cru has a very impressive bouquet of ample citrus fruit, Granny Smith apples and mineral aromas - more Puligny Premier Cru in style than Saint-Aubin. The well-balanced palate features an orange-zest- and grapefruit-infused entry, very well-judged acidity and impressive depth and length toward the finish. This is one of the best Les Charmois I have encountered this vintage. Bon vin! Drink 2021-2034.93 points
