Sadie Family Wines 'Kokerboom' Semillon, Olifantsrivier, South Africa 2017

59.00

A blend of Semillon Blanc and Gris from vines fast-approaching their 100th birthday. It’s rich in texture, no doubt the result of the extremely long fermentation, but the fruit is keen and lively. mixing tropical guava and papaya with cooler lemon and grapefruit. Talking about this wine now (in Cape Town 2018) is to peer into a crystal ball, because this is a South African grand cru that will still be drinking beautifully in 20 years’ time. 13.5% alc. Drink 2021-2038.

Press reviews:

Tim Atkin MW: “Right up there with the equally brilliant 2016, this incredible blend of Semillon Blanc and Gris from Henk Laing’s Trekpoort farm on Citrusdal Mountain took six months to finish fermenting in 2017. A “ridiculous vineyard” it may be, but the wine it produces is rich and waxy with stony, pink grapefruit-like acidity. 2020-2027.” 98 points

Vinous: “The 2017 Kokerboom is Sadie’s pure Sémillon from vines that are now 93 years old. It has a very well defined bouquet of yellow flowers, jasmine and touches of orange pith. The palate is supremely well balanced, with a perfect line of acidity, a waxy texture and hints of white pepper, lemon curd and a dab of sour lemon that lingers in the mouth. This is quite profound. Drink 2020-2040.” 96 points
