Zowee! A wine with searing intensity, energy and power, glorious minerality and taut concentration of stone fruits with a hint of bitter lemon, raw quince and sour mango. Dramatically long. One of the greatest South African white wines ever made. No exaggeration. 14% alc. Drink now-2035.

Press review:

Tim Atkin MW: “A great grower, a great site, a great winemaker and a great vintage: it doesn’t get much better in the Chenin Blanc world than this stunning, focused, multi-dimensional white from Basie van Lill’s property on the Skurfberg. Combining citrus and stone fruit flavours, it’s a wine that’s steered and marshalled by its acidity. Stunning. 2020-28.” 98 points

Vinous: “The 2017 Skurfberg is 100% Chenin Blanc from a 1.5-hectare parcel planted between 1940 and 1955 and was fermented and aged in old foudres. It has a very sophisticated bouquet of Japanese yuzu, mirabelle, a little honeysuckle and a light turpentine scent. The palate is beautifully balanced with perfect acidity, veins of stem ginger and a touch of curry leaf fanning out wonderfully on the finish along with hints of white peach and melon. This is one of the standouts from Eben this year.” 96 points
