Sandhi Chardonnay, Santa Rita Hills, California 2015

Time-travellers from the past would be astonished to discover that this is a Californian Chardonnay. Thanks in no small part to people like Raj Parr and Sashi Moorman (owner and winemaker at Sandhi), the landscape has changed and the wines coming out of California are tighter, tauter, tenser and, crap, I’ve run out of alliteration, than ever before. This Chardonnay is as sharp as a pin-striped pin, with immaculately tailored fruit that allows the mineral inflections to shine. According to Raj Parr, “Sandhi is dedicated to making wines of finesse, minerality, acidity, structure and balance.” Job done. 13% alc. Drink now-2025.

Press review:

Jancis Robinson: "Superbly aromatic nose with a sparky reductive note plus fantastic pure fruit – apple, melon, grapefruit – it's just so exciting and vibrant. Lengthy, leesy, funky and pure. Exquisite length. This puts many burgundies to shame." 17.5 points

Jancis Robinson (Tamlyn Currin): “Cool, restrained; sea-salt and samphire and oyster shells before glistening mandarin and lemon fruit breaks through. Long and drawing on tremendous tension. Restrained, stony rather than ripe, and yet there's a wildness coiled in the core. Drink 2018-2024” 17.5 points

Jancis Robinson (Richard Hemming): “Stunning – full of reductive, funky, sulphidic aromas of flint and smoke plus superb apple fruit and a light caramel touch too. Utterly engaging. Drink now-2028.” 17.5 points
