Frank Skinner tells a story from his stand-up days when he was in his dressing-room before a show and a young comedian walked in wearing a canary-yellow three-piece suit and one of the other comics said “Oh, you’ve got a lot of faith in your material then.”

The simple, elegant label on this Savigny-Les-Beaune tells you very little about what to expect, but there is plenty of substance to the wine itself. There's a softness to the fruit that comes from the unusual inclusion of a small percentage of Pinot Gris, which is permitted under AOC law. It just fleshes out the steelier side of the Chardonnay fruit, enriching it without the need for the buttery or creamy effects of malolactic fermentation. It's one hell of a stylish white Burgundy, loaded with pale-fleshed orchard fruits and white flowers, a hint of the hay and honey that you sometimes find in Chablis, and a confident expression of Chardonnay fruit without the need for overly flashy oak. 13% alc. Drink now-2022.
