Shaw + Smith 'Lenswood Vineyard' Chardonnay, Adelaide Hills, Australia 2016

If Australia has produced a more thrilling Chardonnay than this, then we haven’t tasted it yet (Disclaimer: this tasting note was written before we had tasted the Tolpuddle Chardonnay!). This high altitude vineyard has allowed Shaw + Smith to produce a wine with all the fruit energy and mineral persistence of a Meursault from Jean-Marc Roulot or a Chassagne-Montrachet from Pierre Yves Colin-Morey. The intensity is almost brutal, it’s like being attacked by a ferocious gang of rock-throwing grapes, but there’s succour in the soothing balm of sweet stone fruits, toasted hazelnuts and stem ginger. If you are in any doubt as to whether Australia can challenge the finest white Burgundy, then you ought to try this, because it's the gamechanger we have been waiting for. 13% alc. Drink now-2026.

Press reviews:

Decanter: “Located in the cool Lenswood sub-region, this vineyard, originally planted for fizz, produces a pale, precise Chardonnay. Gentle lees-stirring sheathes the rapier-like palate of Golden Delicious, grapefruit sorbet and lime zest, with a hint of struck match. Ageing for 10 months in 500-litre French oak puncheons adds delicate vanilla nuances, allowing the crystalline fruit to shine. Drink now-2026.“ 97 points

The Australian Wine Companion: “A compelling wine; exudes power with lots of flavour but doesn't appear overworked or too big. Kicks off with ginger flower, more stone fruit this vintage, some citrus (especially mandarin), and complex leesy notes with creamed honey. Deep, with a luscious palate of woodsy spices and balanced oak. Complex, yet keeps a lightness of touch.” 97 Points

James Suckling: “This offers impressive complexity and depth. Really tight-wound and reductive with citrus and peaches abound. The palate has a sleek, composed and linear style and really impressively judged ripeness. There’s a zesty edge to the fruit. Elegant and long.” 96 points

Gourmet Traveller: “The high-altitude Lenswood Vineyard has enabled Shaw + Smith to up the ante for Chardonnay. The complex bouquet holds lemon/citrus and mineral nuances, while the palate is tremendously intense, delicate and precise.” 96 Points
