Thorne & Daughters 'Rocking Horse', Western Cape, South Africa 2017

It’s wonderful to be able to use the word ‘classic’ when referring to a Cape blend, because these multi-varietal blends of French grape varieties have now become stalwarts of the South African wine scene (think of Mullineux, Badenhorst, Sadie etc) and the Rocking Horse 2017 from a Thorne & Daughters is a classic and a great addition to the ranks. An equal parts blend of Roussanne, Chenin Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay and Clairette that combines the juicy ripeness of soft orchard fruits with the tang of orange-skinned citrus fruits. 13.8% alc. Drink now-2024.

Press review:

Tim Atkin MW: “As big as 2015, but more refined,” is how John Seccombe describes the 2017 vintage of this five-way blend of Roussanne, Chenin, Semillon, Chardonnay and Clairette Blanche. Seamlessly complex, with tangerine, citrus and considerable underlying depth. 2019-2025” 96 points
