Customers often ask us to recommend something quirky that they might overlook if left to their own devices and we think this new addition to our list – a traditional Hungarian (dry) blend of Furmint (75%) and Hárslevelű (25%) – is a lovely, lovely thing. It was conceived on a balcony in Camberwell (!) by two London-based sommeliers called Gergel Barsi Szabó and Donald Edwards, and within a year the pair had produced their first vintage (less than 700 bottles) – without actually owning any of their own vineyards or winemaking equipment. It’s quite restrained at first, with delicate notes of quince, white pear and lime zest coming to the fore followed by an exotic twist of lychee and a tease of musk and spice as it opens up in the glass. The palate is pure, almost glacial, and it slips down with the palate-pleasing ease of a mouthful of fruit sorbet. Wonderful but not weird. 13% alc. Drink now – 2020.
