We are paid-up superfans of the magnificent white Rioja 'Gravonia' made by Lopez de Heredia, but it is getting harder and harder to get hold of, so we've had to look elsewhere to get our fix. It didn't take long and came in the shape of this extraordinary wine, a blend of 10 vintages of Viura dating back to 2007. Yes, that's 10 vintages!

It's an extraordinary creation. A 'Grand Cru' in every sense of the word, as it shares the structural attributes of a Corton-Charlemagne or a Chevalier-Montrachet in terms of grandeur with a voice that reaches the back row of the upper circle, not to mention a scenery-chewing sense of drama and incredible length. The aromas and flavours of honeysuckle, candied orange peel, dried mango, apricot, coconut cream, vanilla and stripped timber amplify in the mouth and demand some magnificent dish as an accompaniment. Some may argue that the oak is too prominent. Others may say get over yourself, because this is a classic representation of an important, albeit disappearing tradition of slowly barrel-aged white Rioja. 13% alc. Drink now-2030.

Press reviews:

The Wine Advocate: "It's a fascinating, deep golden coloured white that reminded me of the whites from Marqués de Murrieta and López de Heredia; it has those diesel-like aromas, hints of chamomile, dry flowers, honey wax, nuts, orange peel and pollen. The wine matured in 225-litre barrels of new and used French and American oak, and 5% Bulgarian acacia wood. The palate is fresh with lively acidity, pungent flavours and incredible richness. This is a great discovery, a wine that goes back to the old tradition of long aging in barrel. 1,500 numbered bottles were filled." 93 points
