When you lie on a bed of nails, it only hurts if there’s a protruding nail. The same can be said for a great wine, because it only tastes unbalanced if one of the elements is out of alignment with the others. Here’s a great example of a full-bodied wine from a very warm vintage where all the components are in tune with one another. It’s a delicious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot sourced from vineyards that are farmed biodynamically and the fruit tastes vibrant and vital. Although its aged in oak, the influence on the aromas and flavours is minimal, as is the use of sulphur, so this is a very pure, fruit-driven style, with some bright mineral coolness shining through the sweet plum and sanded balsa wood flavours. There’s a classical feel to it, but no austerity, because the fruit is so toothsome and it gives the impression that every berry was polished by a diamond cutter. Terrific value for such a carefully-made wine. 14.5% alc. Drink now-2029.
