One of the stars at the biennial ‘New Wave’ Tasting, if not the overall star wine. It should be the flagbearer for South African Syrah, a wine that manages to coax the most beautiful top notes that only Syrah can offer (violets, pink peppercorn, rose petal and deer musk), while showing fathoms of satisfying depth. It’s a wine with real personality and that will come as no surprise to anyone who has met its winemaker, Ryan Mostert. 13% alc. Drink now-2025.

Press review:

Tim Atkin MW: “Rhône obsessed Ryan Mostert is edging closer and closer towards the top of the Syrah pile in South Africa. Influenced by a harvest spent at Jamet in Côte Rôtie, this five vineyard blend was totally fermented with whole bunches. Black fruits, tapenade, floral top notes and incredible focus define this wine. 2021-2030.' 94 points

Christian Eedes: “From a Paardeberg vineyard planted in 1989 of granite on shale. Wonderfully fragrant nose of rose petal, herbs, cherries and pomegranate. The palate shows pure fruit, an exhilarating line of acidity and powdery tannins, the finish long and salty – a poised and very elegant rendition of the variety. Mostert would probably baulk at having any of his wines described as “precise” but that is very much what this wine is. Alcohol: 12.7%.' 95 points

Jancis Robinson: “Gorgeous perfume, with black pepper, dark chocolate, malt, liquorice and tar. Beautiful and robust and long. Drink now-2024.” 17.5+ points
