NEW! Alheit Vineyards 'Fire by Night' Chenin Blanc, Paardeberg, South Africa 2018

46.00

It’s the famous rocky outcrop of decomposed granite that is farmed by local heroes like Eben Sadie, Adi Badenhorst and Craig Hawkins. The 2018 ‘Fire By Night’ shows classic Paardeberg characteristics of richness and minerality in equal abundance. Pear, mango, apple granita, green plum, lime juice and thatching straw. A beautiful wine named after an episode in The Bible where God provides a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night to show the Israelites the way during their exodus from Egypt. Chris tried to capture his own feelings of isolation, loss, direction and purpose on the label. 12.8% alc. Fermented in cement eggs. Drink 2020-2030.

Press review:

Jancis Robinson: “Chris Alheit is very thrilled that they were able to buy this 1978-planted Chenin vineyard two weeks ago – they used to buy the fruit. A little less open than the Cartology. Some lime fruit and crunchy green apple, tangerine as it opens. A gentle oak mealiness on the palate and fabulous fruit purity with a dry finesse that seems to be the granite effect. Utterly mouth-watering without being tart. Very persistent. Drink 2021-2030.” 17.5 points

Tim Atkin MW: “Fire by Night comes from a farm that Chris Alheit acquired in August 2019, which secures the source of this impressive Chenin. Made with fruit from a cooler, morning sun-facing parcel, it shows the taut, almost austere minerality that's a feature of the Nuwedam farm, layers of spice, lees and subtle oak and lovely precision. Drink 2021-2030.” 94 points
