NEW! Alheit Vineyards 'Nautical Dawn', False Bay, South Africa 2018

39.00

Named after the second type of visible dawn (after ‘Astronomical Dawn’, but before ‘Civil Dawn’), Nautical Dawn is a Chenin Blanc from False Bay, where Chris says the vineyards produce “athletic grapes”. It’s a real beauty, slightly sweeter in its fruit profile than the more austere and restrained Radio Lazarus (which immediately preceded it at the tasting) and brimming with pineapple and papaya and lemon oil. 13.5% alc. Drink now-2030.

Jancis Robinson: “Very clean-cut citrus aroma. Both mineral and saline, even a little smoky. On the palate, there’s stunning clementine freshness and a cool silky texture even though the aroma is chalky. Fluid and salty on the finish. (JH). Drink 2020 – 2028.” 17.5 points

Tim Atkin MW: “Nautical Dawn is a reference to the location of this Firgrove vineyard, very close to False Bay. Picked early, despite its maritime influence, it's grown on coastal granite and has a salty, almost seaweedy note, layers of beeswax, lanolin and baking yeast, subtle oak and vibrant acidity. Drink 2021-2028.” 96 points
