Mavroudi, Vourvoukeli Estate, Thrace, Greece 2018

£24.50

People say that you can’t buy class, but you can, and what’s more, it’s only £24.50! It comes in the shape of this bottle of Greek red wine, made from the lesser-spotted Mavroudi grape, which tastes a bit like Barolo, but with a little more glossy depth, as if the Nebbiolo grape had an affair with a black cherry and produced this wonderful lovechild. You can treat it like a ‘serious’ wine if you so wish, which involves pouring it into a decanter and talking long-windedly about structure and finesse, but we suggest sloshing it into a wide-bowled glass and drinking it with noisy friends and herb-crusted roast lamb, as the flavours of cherry, pomegranate and cranberry will match perfectly. It spent 6 months in new oak. Only 3,000 bottles were produced. 13.5% alc. Drink now-2028.
