“The depth of aromas and flavours is breathtaking.” - The Wine Advocate, 98 points

“Malbec doesn't get much better than this.” - Tim Atkin MW, 97 points

It’s still early days for Per Se, but we are convinced that they are destined to become the primus inter pares of Argentina’s wineries. Having had the pleasure of meeting Edy del Popolo and David Bonomi, tasted all of their the wines (including the 100-point ‘La Craie’) and seen the work they are doing in Gualtallary, a remote corner of Mendoza, we think it’s only a matter of time before somebody calls them the Chateau Lafite of Argentina. Well, that didn’t take long!

The ‘Iubileus’ Malbec vineyard is less than a hectare in size, with a deep topsoil (46cm if you are interested) over a calcareous subsoil and that limestone content gives the wine a firm character, but as Edy said “the wines don’t taste of the soil, they taste of the structure of the soil” and that’s probably the most accurate-yet-concise explanation of minerality I have ever heard. The 2018 pours a very deep colour, a shirt-staining crimson, and offers very pretty floral aromas over deep cassis, with dark, thorny, minty fruit on the palate finishing with a sophisticated pinch of dry tannins. It’s a wine for the ages, a serious, elegant, subtle and age-worthy wine, not wholly unlike Chateau Lafite. 14% alc. 16 months in French oak. Only 1,500 bottles produced. Drink now-2050.

Press reviews:

The Wine Advocate: “This year, the ‘Iubileus’ is unusually tight, especially aromatically, and the wine needed time in the glass (or a decanter) to open up but remained with a serious and austere personality. The palate is tremendously chalky, almost powdery, with very fine tannins, fine-grained and finer than those from the Volare del Camino, with less fruit and more soil. This is rather impressive, serious and mineral, with long aging potential. It continues the path started in 2017, a wine with filigree and finesse, a very elegant and subtle vintage for ‘Iubileus’ with no heat or excess ripeness but with grapes that developed fully, and the depth of aromas and flavours is breathtaking. Drink now-2030.” 98 points

Tim Atkin MW: “it's amazing to think that this stunning Malbec comes from five-year-old vines - just imagine how good the vineyard will be in another decade or two - but this is a remarkable high altitude site. Subtle, refined and wonderfully scented, with polished tannins, chalky intensity and zesty, almost mouth-watering finish. Malbec doesn't get much better than this. Drink now-2030.” 97 points

JancisRobinson.com (previous vintage): “Such a vibrant attractive nose – bursting with bubble-gum blueberry fruit, garrigue, cocoa and spices. The palate is silky smooth with such precision – the tannins are chalky, rounded, ripe and seductive and the fruit effortlessly blends into the structure of the wine. Beneath the fruit lies a subtle smoked-game note adding complexity. Layered, with bright acidity, superb concentration and a long, pure, precise, mineral finish. Fantastic.” 18.5 points
