Storm 'Ridge' Pinot Noir, Hemel-en Aarde, South Africa 2021

£36.00

The highest site in the range at 330m in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, the ‘Ridge’ Pinot benefits from a cool south easterly wind. Its easterly exposition means a longer hang time and this, combined with similar Bokkeveld shale and clay soils as the ‘Vrede’ vineyard, means that stylistically it sits in between Vrede and Ignis. Always a bit darker in colour and profile, exhibiting an array of graphite, lead pencils and ferric notes. A prevailing south easterly wind cools the site. 7,000 vines per hectare (vs 4,500 for the other two) means a higher density planting. 13% alc. Drink now-2028.

Press reviews:

Jamie Goode: “Pale in colour. Ripe, elegant and lightly structured, with fine red cherry notes. Juicy, light and with some orange peel notes. Supple and pure.” 96 points

Tim Atkin MW: “Ridge comes from the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge and is the youngest of the Storm Pinot Noir vineyards, located on the same shale soils but at a considerably higher altitude. Darker in colour than Hannes Storm's other wines, it's dense, fresh and a little tighter with dark cherry and graphite notes and a savoury, spicy finish. Drink now-2027.” 95 points
