Palo Cortado is our favourite sherry style, because it combines a bit of everything. It's effectively a fino that failed to develop a flor (the veil of yeast cells that float on the surface, protecting the fino from further oxidation and imparting those classic salty, nutty and, well, yeasty flavours). Without the flor, it ages like an Oloroso, so you find more nutty raisiny notes, yet still with the zest that lingers from its beginnings as a fino. This is a truly great example.from Bodegas Rey Fernando de Castilla and we were thrilled to see that it has just been voted Decanter's Top Fortified Wine for 2016.

Decanter: "Deep in aromatic intensity and equally powerful in the mouth. Great combination of raisins, orange blossom and beeswax., with a very distinct nuttiness. Dry and pure on the palate with the driving energy of hazelnuts, mocha, liquorice and considerable zestiness. This is really terrific! 20% alc. Drink now-2022."

The Wine Advocate: "The amber-coloured NV Antique Palo Cortado has a clean, changing, lifted nose of white chocolate, orange marmalade, almonds and incense, while the balanced palate comes through quite intense, sharp, with good acidity and length. 3,000 bottles were filled." 93 points
