Aside from gout and broken blood vessels, one of the more useful symptoms that you develop as a wine merchant is a mental algorithm that allows you to calculate the ‘price versus quality’ ratio of a wine with a fair degree of speed and accuracy. Bells start to ring as soon as the formula spits out a positive result and this wine did exactly that. Our mental algorithm immediately placed it in the £20+ category, so the campanologists went to work when we learned that we could sell it for £16.95. It’s a Chardonnay from the guys at Wildeberg from a single vineyard in Banghoek, which is wild yeast fermented and partly aged in oak. The result is a delectable Chardonnay offering up classic citrus, stone fruit and crème fraiche, nutty oak notes, a touch of spice and tautened by a fine string of acidity, which keeps the wine fresh and beautifully balanced.
