Magpie Estate 'Clovella' Grenache Mourvedre, Australia 2019

£16.95

We don’t know any town criers, but if we did, we’d send them into the market square with news about this wine at the top of their scroll. It’s one of those crazy bargains that ought to be shouted from the rooftops, a wine that gives so much of itself it feels as if it can’t do enough for you. It’s headily perfumed with inky blueberries, spicy blackcurrant cordial, saturated black cherries, cinnamon and sweet vanilla and the palate is sweetly succulent, mellifluous and joyful to drink. If I’d had this much concentration when I was at school, I might have amounted to something! It brings all the sun-filled exuberance of a Barossa Valley red, but without the punch-in-the-face tannins. It’s a field blend of Mataro (also known as Mourvedre) and Grenache from a 40-year old vineyard in the Gomersal sub-district of the Barossa Valley co-fermented in largely older French and a little American oak and aged for a luxurious 18 months in barrel before being bottled. 14% alc. Drink now-2025.
