To call this a poor man's Vega Sicilia would be to do it an injustice. It's a lot closer in quality to that great Ribera del Duero red than it is in price and is seriously well-endowed for a humble Crianza. It’s one of those wines in which all the elements align (vintage, winemaking, bottle age) and it becomes greater than the sum of its parts. We tasted the whole of Abadia de Acon's range, from their Joven and their Roble to their Reserva, their Seleccion and their icon wine, Targum, and it was this Crianza that stood out, not only for value, but as the wine that you would want to drink plenty more of. It's a hand-harvested Tempranillo, aged for 14 months in Bordeaux barrels (longer than is required for crianza status) and rounded off in bottle for 2 years before release. The aromas are those you would expect to find in a top class Reserva, glowing with rich blackcurrants, milk chocolate, cedar and vanilla, and the palate is deep and rich, with velvety tannins and a wonderful fusion of sandalwood, creamy blueberries and tangy blackberries. It tastes magnificent on Day One, but if you have some left in the bottle, it tastes even better on Day Two, which is a sure sign that it will age well. One of our best ever finds! 14.5% alc.
