Arbois Trousseau 'Singulier' Benedicte & Stephane Tissot, Jura, France 2023

£46.00

A pale and delicate red from the Jura, about as light as a red wine gets before people start wondering if you have poured them a rosé. Delicate notes of cherry, raspberry tea, blood orange, graphite and clementine create a wine that feels as if the fruit has been infused rather than extracted. I would put it in the same category as a lacy, northern climate Pinot Noir, a Païs or a Listan Negro. It is unfiltered, so expect the colour to be a little hazy [Stéphane Tissot suggests shaking the bottle to mix the sediment into the wine - see The Wine Advocate review below]. 13% alc. Drink now-2036.

Press reviews:

The Wine Advocate: “I loved the purity of the bottled 2023 Trousseau ‘Singulier’, a wine I had admired early on last year. Tissot destems Trousseau and Poulsard by hand and ferments Pinot Noir with full clusters, and this had a gentle vinification and a long infusion, one month for part of it and up to three months for the rest. He shocked my companions by shaking the bottle before it was poured. He said the sediment makes the wines last longer on the palate. To our faces of disbelief, he jumped out of his chair and into the cellar to fetch another bottle that he uncorked carefully and poured without moving the sediment for comparison. It was unbelievable but true, the shaken bottle had a much longer mouthfeel, while the clean one felt much shorter and the fruit suddenly dropped, while the one mixed with the sediment stayed much longer. According to Tissot, all Jura reds should be shaken and mixed with the sediment before pouring. Drink now-2032.” 94 points

Vinous: “The 2023 Arbois Trousseau ‘Singulier’ neatly frames crushed violets, ripe cranberry and pomegranate alongside earthy aspects. Full of substance and life, this delicious Trousseau walks off the stage with a remarkably juicy finish. Drink now-2028.” (91-93) points

Jancis Robinson MW (previous vintage): “Pale ruby. Really beautiful poise. This tastes rather like a warm slate, in fact, with lovely round tannins and a dry finish after an utterly seductive rose-scented, fresh, fruity palate that almost tastes sweet, although I'm sure there is no residual sugar to speak of. This leaves the throat thoroughly soothed and intrigued. Juicy but far from simple. I'm just not sure of the likely ageing potential of wines like this – my fault – but it's so gorgeous and persistent now, I don't really see any point in keeping it.” 17 points
