A blend of Sumoll and Merlot, in which the Merlot provides the plump, plummy fruit while the Sumoll brings the gloss and acidity and hints of tamarind and smoky bacon. It’s inky in colour and fairly full-bodied, yet fresh and lively, dusted with sweet spices and a real sense of place. I’d even go so far as to say that it has a sense of grandeur, in that its flavours echo cross the palate. 13% alc. Drink now-2026. NB I took this to a BYOB restaurant and didn’t finish the bottle. I came back 3 weeks later and the waiter came over and said he had kept the wine in case I wanted to finish it. I didn’t want to dismiss his thoughtful gesture, so I gave it a try, expecting it to be vinegar, and it was still in great shape! I happily polished off the rest of the bottle.

A classic Minervois red blend of Grenache (70%), Mourvèdre (20%) and Cinsault (10%) aged in foudres (large oak casks) for 12 months. It pours the colour of black cherry juice and looks so glossy and healthy that you can almost taste it with your eyes. There’s also a suggestion, possibly an auto-suggestion due to the colour, of black cherry on the nose, laced with violets, white pepper, orange peel and a cool graphite tone that brings freshness to the palate, which is as silky as a silkworm’s kimono. The tannins are so soft and juicy, but they’re not pushovers, they stand their ground with food and give the wine enough backbone to allow it to age for several more years, so I would suggest drinking it from now until 2028, drinking up by 2030. There’s real polish to the fruit, which is sourced from the domaine’s biodynamically-farmed vineyards, and (setting aside the debate as to whether it’s the result of correlation or causation) the wine has a real sense of dynamic energy to it, which I often find lacking in southern French reds, which can feel sullen and sluggish. Here, the fruit is vibrant and alive, bringing a freshness and a moreishness to the palate. 14% alc. Drink now-2030.

When it comes to the wines from Priorat, we often hear the same complaint from our customers. They say that they can’t afford the wines they like and they don’t like the wines they can afford. It’s not fun being the piggy in the middle in that game, but we have finally found a Priorat red that we believe squares the circle.
It’s a gloriously hedonistic blend of Grenache, Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 12 months in 300 litre French oak barrels and, if we do say so ourselves, tastes insanely good! It’s not impenetrably dark, like many of Priorat’s top reds, which can often taste like chewing on liquorice sticks, it’s lifted and perfumed and sweetly seductive. Imagine scented red-fleshed plums, cherry skins, peonies and Welch’s grape jelly, heightened by grace notes of tamarind, orange peel, cinnamon stick and sheer splendour. It’s rich, but silky and succulent and the tannins are saturated in sweet purple fruits, so it doesn’t stall on the palate, but glides down much too easily and is beautiful to drink with or without food. A dark mineral streak leads to a long, precisely tapered finish where all the delicious elements happily converge. 14% alc. Limited production (790 cases). Drink now-2032.
