Ca'N Verdura Supernova Negre, Mallorca, Spain 2024
Mallorca has long attracted artists, dreamers and people looking to escape the ordinary. The Supernova Negre 2024 seems to have inherited a little of that spirit. It bursts from the glass with a bright constellation of red cherries, wild strawberries, sweet red plums and fragrant herbs, it feels as though somebody bottled a Mediterranean summer evening just as the sun was disappearing below the horizon. The palate is fresh, juicy and full of energy. Ripe red fruits and hedgerow berries tumble across the tongue, with notes of sweet cranberry and raspberry adding extra brightness, while a dry, savoury edge keeps everything beautifully balanced. There's plenty of concentration here, but it wears it lightly, gliding rather than stomping, thanks to tannins that are so silky they barely seem to touch the sides. A gentle meaty note on the finish adds an extra layer of intrigue, but this remains, above all else, a wine about pure drinking pleasure. A wine that manages to be both laid-back and energetic at the same time—rather like Mallorca itself. Organic farming. 13.5% alc. Drink now - 2029.
Press Reviews:
TWA (Luis Gutiérrez): “With its strawberry and spice notes, the very young and aromatic 2024 Supernova Mantonegro made me think of a red Burgundy. It comes from head-pruned vineyards on the red clay and limestone soils called call vermell, from 13 different plots ranging between 35 and 50 years of age, which is different from the previous vintages, as they lost some old vines but got some new younger ones. It fermented by plot, in different ways and materials, always trying to preserve the freshness, and it matured in 500-liter barrels and 2,000- and 3,000-liter troncoconic oak vats for eight months. It has less ripeness and alcohol (13.5%) than 2023, with a pH of 3.6 and 4.7 grams of acidity, and it's fresher and has better balance. It has a medium-bodied palate and very fine, slightly chalky tannins and is more elegant.” 93+ points
