What we love about the ‘Underhill’ Shiraz is the way it combines the aromatic pyrotechnics of the kind you find in Henschke’s ‘Hill of Grace’ with the opulent richness of Chris Ringland’s old-vine Shiraz, but, and it’s a big but, I cannot lie, it comes in at only 13.5% alc. That is some winemaking devilry, I tell you! It’s like one of those beautifully produced songs, which sounds simple on first hearing, but you slowly realise is composed of hundreds of perfectly equalised individual tracks. It really is a masterpiece and it’s no wonder that Sarah Crowe was crowned ‘Winemaker of the Year’ by The Australian Wine Companion. Drink now-2040.

Press reviews:

Tamlyn Currin for JancisRobinson.com: “The aroma coming out of this glass is knee-bucklingly good! Dark crimson, shiny, ravishingly ripe fruit, conched acidity spiralling through and pulling the sweetness and intensity and concentration up and up and up through glossy, tonewood tannins. Cigar and mocha. Daringly ravishing and vividly fresh. All curves and stunningly smooth lines, like running your fingers the length and breadth of a luthier-made cello. Drink now-2038.” 17.5 points

Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion: “A riotous amalgam of aromas including blueberries, potpourri, liquorice root, Szechuan pepper and caraway seeds. Medium bodied and elegant, this has terrific viscosity and the tannins are oh, so powdery and fine. Gorgeous now and over the next 10 years or longer.” 97 points
