Vinified in amphora then aged in 600-litre barrels, it rings out with purity and intricate details. Hints of sunbaked clay, dried white blossom, lavender and mint swirl around the raspberry core. Unexpectedly dense, this is equally surprising in its nimble gracefulness, and freshness pulsates. The tannins are silky and smooth yet authoritatively grippy. Effortlessly breezy but not easygoing. The Wine Advocate: “The Fontodi 2022 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Pastrolo stands apart from the other top-end wines in this portfolio thanks to its fruit sourcing. It comes from a vineyard at 600 meters in elevation in the tiny enclave community of Lamole, located in one of the most isolated corners of the appellation with compact sandstone soils called Macigno del Chianti. It offers a punchy and bright personality with lots of berry fruit, grilled watermelon and macerated cherry skin-like aromas. This was a hot vintage, and it shows. The wine carries a 15% alcohol content, which surprises me. It ages in tonneaux for 20 months after fermentation and maceration in terracotta amphorae. Drink now-2042” 94 points
