Comando G 'Las Rozas 1er Cru', Mentrida, Spain 2021
Goodbye old friend! The last vintage of the ‘Rozas 1er Cru’. I’m not crying, you’re crying. It comes from Garnacha vineyards in the foothills of the Gredos Mountains at 900 metres. As with all the reds, the wine undergoes a lengthy maceration and whole cluster ferment in open top followed by 10 months maturation in a concrete and large oak vats. The colour is fabulous – like pomegranate juice. A fragrant nose with notes of cherry, blood orange, delicate floral fragrances, thyme and a hint of rose petal. On the palate it feels shiny, like cherry skins, softened by orange blossom and finishing with razor-sharp precision. 14% alc. Organic & biodynamic farming. Drink now-2034.
Press reviews:
The Wine Advocate: “The last vintage of the ‘Rozas 1er Cru’, because the wine changes in 2022. The 2021 Rozas 1er Cru, a lieu-dit red from the village of Rozas de Puerto Real, is from the same plots as in previous years but cropped from a cool year. They used full clusters with long macerations, an infusion, and it aged in large oak foudres for one year. It's a serious, austere and cold vintage for this wine, which is narrow, mineral and sharp but with full development of flavours, as they picked the grapes at very good ripeness, and the wine finished with 14% alcohol. With time in the glass, it developed some Rhône-ish meaty notes. It has very fine and elegant tannins, rounder than those in warmer years. It feels superb. Drink now-2032.” 95 points
Tim Atkin MW: “Powerful – yet elegant – Spanish mountain Garnacha. The wine spent a year in large oak foudres, framing the wine which has real weight and substance. Red cherry and redcurrant on the nose combine with an intense ferrous note and a bitter campari twist to create a wine with impressive complexity. A medicinal note on the finish adds interest. It is a wine of its year and altitude: direct, textural and driven by acidity. 14% alc. Drink now-2031.” 95 points
Vinous: “Fermented with whole clusters, it presents sour cherry, herbal tones, orange peel and a touch of cherry over a delicate profile. A hint of chocolate-orange emerges with air. Grippy yet delicate, it has a light, aqueous feel and a touch of fruit, gaining depth and definition in the finish. This modern red avoids the the region’s sun-driven style in favour of varietal expression. Drink now-2037.“ 95 points
