Envinate Taganan 'Parcela Margalagua', Tenerife, Spain 2019

£52.00

This comes from one of the most dramatic vineyards in Tenerife, on the north coast, facing the the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The wine itself is quite pale, like rosehip cordial. So fresh, so pure, so elegant, so Tenerife! The fruit is beautifully pared down, as if reduced to its bare essence. Thinly sliced strawberries and cherries and rose petals. Elegance… from a volcano! 12% alc. Vegan-friendly. Drink now-2028.

Winemaking
Mostly Listan Negro and Negramoll, but also a little of the white variety, Listan Blanco. Red basalt soils of volcanic origin. Spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with ambient yeasts in open vats using 100% of the stems. Daily punching down, and malolactic conversion in a neutral French oak barrels of 500 litres. Aged in the same barrels for a year on its lees, without any racking. Simple really.

Press review:

The Wine Advocate:The 2019 Táganan Parcela Margalagua comes from a zone that has been vinified and bottled separately since 2012 because it has a very strong personality, not surprisingly, because it's one of the most fascinating and exceptional vineyards I've ever seen in my life. Since 2015, they've understood that this place is about elegance and depth rather than power. And since 2016, there's been a reduction of rain and yields, so they had to adapt the pruning. It comes from a field blend of 88% red grapes—Negramoll and Listán Negro—and 12% Listán Blanco on rocky volcanic soils. The full clusters were foot trodden in 1,000-litre plastic bins with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured for one year in neutral 228-litre oak barrels without racking or added sulphur. It has the tantalising and elegant aromas from Margalagua, violets and roses, volcanic ash, peppery notes and pungent flavours with a very fine texture. This is a little more volcanic than the 2020, a little more concentrated. Drink now-2029.” 97 points
