Langelo Rosso, Bucciarelli, Castellina, Tuscany, Italy 2020

£22.95

This glorious Sangiovese/Merlot blend teleports you straight into the heart of Tuscany with its inviting, high-toned nose of spiced plums, morello cherry skins, weathered brick, tea leaves, freshly squeezed orange juice, wet leaves and old oak spice, and envelops you in its warm perfumed layers. It has a big yet entirely proportioned structure, rich, bold and mouth-filling with fine-grained tannins and a tangy vibrant finish. The flavours are at a lovely state of maturity, but the wine remains beautifully fresh. Made in a baby Super Tuscan style, this is a seriously classy drop. And to boot, as the name intimates, this estate has a rather special history of its own having initially been owned by Michelangelo in the 16th century! 14.5% alc. Drink now-2032.

Press review:

JancisRobinson.com: “Sangiovese has the mic and owns the stage in this blend, strutting its 'lick my raw bricks' and 'eat my dust' stuff while tossing streamers of sour-cherry favours and bitter-bark teasers at all the fans. The Merlot follows, trying to tone down the terracotta-tile cavalcade by mopping up the dust with plum juice. It's sinewy, chewy, fresh and uncompromisingly Tuscan, tasting of hot dry summer days and dusty roads and wild figs in little spots of shade. Drink now-2030.” 17 points

We had a bottle of it at the weekend and it was a delicious!  Also looking forward to seeing how it evolves if we manage to hold on to a few of the bottles for a year or two as it definitely felt like it had “space to grow”.” - Mr. D. W.

Solengo Argiano, Tuscany, Italy 2019
£58.00

Argiano’s ‘Solengo’ might just be the last of the affordable SuperTuscans. Deep and inky in colour, the 2019 is a rich and opulent blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Merlot, which stains the palate in sweet black fruits haunted by ethereal notes of sandalwood, soft tobacco leaf, vanilla and sweet spices. It’s like Chateau Palmer in sunglasses, returning from a summer holiday in Tuscany. Drink now for up-front exuberance and show-stopping intensity or wait 5 or 6 years and drink from 2027 onwards for a more subtle and mellow experience. 14% alc.

Press review:

Vinous: “The 2019 Solengo seduces with its richly decadent display of vanilla and mocha-tinged dark fruits and spices, which are wonderfully lifted by minty herbal tones and white smoke. This enters the palate like weighted velvet, smooth and fleshy at first, yet lively, as mineral-tinged black currants mix with fine-grained tannins, clamping down with youthful poise. Like the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove, this tapers off incredibly long and staining, with echoes of liquorice beneath an air of cedar and tobacco; yet somehow, through it all, the palate is left watering for more. It will be many years before the 2019 is ready to show its best, but it will certainly be worth the wait. The Solengo is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese that spends eighteen months refining in a combination of 60% new to 40% second-pass barriques. Drink 2026-2039.” 96 points

Chianti Classico, Tenuta di Carleone, Tuscany, Italy 2023
£32.00

Such a beautiful expression of Radda Chianti, the happy union of a great site, a great winemaker and a great vintage. It’s not a deep, impenetrable colour, it’s almost translucent and comes across as quite delicate in character, as per the ‘house style’ at Tenuta di Carleone, but the tannins are like cashmere and the aromas and flavours are wonderfully authentic Sangiovese without being ostentatious. Don’t mistake it for a fragile Chianti, just because it isn’t impenetrably dark, it doesn’t want for concentration, it’s just light on its feet. 13.5% alc. Drink now-2034. Press reviews:

JancisRobinson.com (previous vintage): “Just mid ruby. A stunning minerally, savoury nose with hints of liquorice root. Sleek, tangy cherry fruit on the palate and richly tannic, yet finely balanced and long. Drink now-2033.” 17.5 points

The Wine Advocate (previous vintage): “This is one of the most original wines from the appellation. The Tenuta di Carleone 2022 Chianti Classico sees partial whole-cluster fruit and up to three months of extended fermentation. The wine opens to a medium-garnet colour with a shiny element to its appearance. The bouquet is similarly bright and punchy with lots of tart red and blue fruits. This wine is extremely giving and bright at the moment. Drink now-2032.” 94 points
