We have been following Eben Sadie’s Columella since its debut vintage in 2000 and we think this is the best iteration we have tasted to date. It has a kind of aristocratic grace, a lingering whisper of feminine perfume, a cold-stone, licked-pencil minerality, and a texture as soft as velvet stroked along the nap. Columella 2024 feels as if it has closed its eyes and breathed in the clean air of the Swartland and let the sunshine warm its skin. A magnificent wine that will give huge pleasure for another 2 decades at least. 14% alc. Drink now-2046.

Syrah takes the lead, accounting for 40% of the cuvée, but this is a collective effort that includes Grenache, Cinsault and even a little Pinotage among other grapes. Violet, thyme and fynbos aromas lead you into a palate of wonderful density and energy, with sculpted tannins, subtle minerality and flavours of tangerine, blackberry and red cherry framed by 5% new oak.
