Sadie Family Wines, Sonvang, Swartland, South Africa 2024
“An outstanding debut.” - Neal Martin, 95 points
This is Eben Sadie’s new red wine and it’s a stunner! If we were to list all the grape varieties, we’d be here all day (there are a dozen), but fans of the weird and wonderful might like to know that it includes Pontac, Lledoner Pelut and Bastardo do Castillo! It takes a genius to conduct such a diverse ensemble of players, but Eben is just that and this is a masterpiece of orchestration. It has beautiful top notes of cranberry, sandalwood, rooibos and rosehip, which I realise makes it sound more like a scented candle than a wine, but the palate is more conventional - smooth, supple, elegant and deliciously redolent of the Mediterranean grapes that inspired Eben, including varieties from Croatia, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain and North Africa. 14% alc. Drink now-2036.
Press reviews:
Tim Atkin MW: “Sonvang is a new wine from Eben Sadie, a Mediterranean-meets-the-Cape field blend of ten varieties that's part of his answer to climate change. The vines are still young at five years of age, but the promise is already exciting. This has fynbos and garrigue aromas, lots of Atlantic Ocean freshness and minerality, plum, redcurrant and wild cherry flavours and refined, sinewy tannins. Drink 2027-2032.” 95 points
Vinous: “The maiden 2024 Sonvang, a field blend of varieties in Eben’s nursery, certainly has one of the more exotic and out-there aromatics with scents of red fruits, hickory, struck flint… something almost volcanic about this. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant, dark berry fruit, touches of white pepper, Provençal herbs and black truffle. Wonderfully balanced, granular in texture, with an insistent grip on the finish, this is an outstanding debut. Drink 2027-2048.” 95 points
