The fabulous 2025 vintage has bestowed South Africa’s winemakers with some wonderful Grenache and Duncan Savage has teased a beautiful wine from these high altitude vines and you can feel a mountain freshness in the purity and clarity of the fruit. It’s a very pretty, fragrant red, with a pomegranate and cranberry pop of sweet and tangy red berries, plus a little gunsmoke, aiming perhaps for Chateau Rayas in style, but also influenced by the Garnachas from Sierra de Gredos. 14% alc. Vinous (Neal Martin): “The 2025 Thief in the Night is a Grenache from Piekenierskloof that includes 20% whole cluster with 2 weeks on the skins is basket-pressed and spends 10 months in 3,400 litre foudre. This has a fragrant bouquet with redcurrant and cranberry scents and wilted rose petals, a little pastille-like in terms of its purity. It is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, lightly spiced with a nicely structured, symmetrical finish. What beautiful wine. Drink now-2050.” 95 points
