Valli 'Waitaki' Pinot Noir, North Otago, New Zealand 2022
“Made with such a light touch and allowed to show its true nature. Gorgeous, fragrant and perfumed.” - Decanter, 95 points
The first time I tasted Pinot Noir, I felt like I was tasting something genuinely divine, a nectar from the gods, glowing like a ruby held up to the sunset and mystically perfumed like agarwood and rosehip. It may not have been the finest example, I don’t even remember what it was, but it was our first kiss and the fingerprint that it left on my heart has made me crave that experience ever since. It takes a pretty special wine to take me back to that moment and I can say without doubt that this North Otago Pinot took me straight there, with its pale, ethereal, red-scented aromas and sweetly succulent hedgerow fruit. I’m not sure how much you would have to pay for a red Burgundy of a similar quality, but I am sure I wouldn’t be able to afford it. 12.5% alc. Drink now-2034.
Press reviews:
Decanter: “Perfumed and pure-fruited with cassis, red liquorice, strawberry jam, red cherry, vanilla and rose petals – think summer pudding. Juicy and upfront with a delicate structure, fine tannins and a bright core of succulent, concentrated fruit with a savoury bass line. Youthful and energetic. Hard to go past the immediate charm, but balance, fine tannins and crunchy acidity suggest it’ll age well. Drink now-2030.” 95 points
Cameron Douglas MS: “A fascinating and complex bouquet filled with scents of light and dark skinned cherry, some raspberry and yellow plum. There’s a distinctive seam of mineral chalk cushioned by core bright red berry fruit flavours, layers of spice and a touch of white smoke. A delicious wine with an abundance of polished, fine-textured tannins and backbone of acidity. Well made, dry, lengthy and complex. Best drinking from 2026 through 2036.” 95 points
