“The wine version of a big, welcoming bear hug.” - JancisRobinson.com

This is Viña Pedrosa’s first organic wine and they are immensely proud of it, as well they might be, having spent over a decade dedicated to its conversion. We have been looking for a top quality Ribera del Duero that we can ship directly and we finally found this beauty after staining our teeth, lips and tongue purple over a period of three days earlier this year. It has the glitzy, glamorous fruit that we seek from a top-notch Ribera, with the barrel ageing adding glossy high-tones.

One swirl of the glass releases a gorgeous array of aromas, from the fruit bowl to the dessert trolley, with sweet, ripe cherries, blackcurrant cordial and red-fleshed plums weaving through vanilla pod, coconut cream and mocha-choca-latte. The grapes are sourced from one of the estate’s highest vineyards, where the diurnal temperature variation elicits wonderfully aromatic Tempranillo grapes. 14.5% alc. Aged for 14 months in American and French oak barrels. Drink now-2036. Certified organic. Vegan friendly.

Press reviews:

Vinous: “The 2023 Viña Pedrosa 'El Otero' is Tinta del Pais with small amounts of Albillo Mayor and Garnacha from Burgos, Ribera del Duero, aged 14 months in American and French oak. Aromas of thyme and mixed herbs rise over confectionary red fruits and oak, giving the wine a vermouth-like tone. The palate is dry, with tannins shaped by the élevage and a firm structure, the warm and dry vintage tightens the wine through the finish, leaving a lingering memory of thyme. Drink now-2038.” 91 points

Jeb Dunnuck (ex-Wine Advocate): “The producer’s first certified organic bottling, sourced from a single vineyard with 5% other varieties growing with the Tempranillo. Bright red cherry and plum highlight a medium-bodied palate with a generous mouthfeel of supple tannins. A well-made balanced wine that will continue to be enjoyable for 7-10 years.“ 90 points

JancisRobinson.com: “Dark-earth, damson nose. Paprika spice. This wine demands you taste it wearing sturdy shoes. It’s a bit like venturing into a red-clay vineyard after heavy rain. Those tannins are claggy and they have weight – not drying, not clumsy, just clinging and weighty and malleable and silky like wet clay. The fruit is exuberant, flecked with graphite and cumin, and the finish is all coffee. It’s frank and hearty, robust and friendly. Really the wine version of a big, welcoming bear hug. Drink now-2033.” 16.5 points
