Sivi Pinot Gris, Marof, Goricko, Slovenia 2020

£32.00

Hard to describe, easy to love. If you think of it as a rosé, then it feels more like an orange wine, but if you think of it as an orange wine, then it feels more like a white wine. It’s a shapeshifting Pinot Gris, which spent time on the skins to enrich the colour (a sort of coral rose-gold) and the flavours.

Spin the flavour wheel and pick three of the following to get a feeling for how it tastes: pink grapefruit, rosehip, apricot kernel, cinnamon, white cherry, ginger, blood orange, baharat, orange peel and dried goji berry.

It’s a delicious, balletic wine for sipping on its own or with an intricate meal that matches its complexities. 12.5% alc. 30 days on the Pinot Gris skins. 2 years in barrel. Drink now-2028.

Press review:

Vinous: “The 2020 Sivi Pinot Goricko opens with a honeyed floral thrust, followed by hints of ginger and nectarines. It’s soft and round on the palate with ripe orchard fruits and exotic spices that cascade throughout, all propelled by zesty acidity. This finishes wildly fresh and long, leaving a pleasantly bitter tinge to linger on. Drink now-2028.” 91 points

Jamie Goode: “This is Pinot Gris, skin fermented in open fermenters, with 30% whole cluster on top. Aged in 500 litre barrels. Lovely pink/orange colour. Beautiful aromatics with floral perfume and notes of orange peel and stewed strawberry. The palate has lovely energy with some green apple, red cherry and then some Campari notes. Really nice sweet and sour character, with great balance. The sweet fruit and the bitterness work together really well.” 94 points
