Mullineux Straw Wine, Swartland, South Africa 2025 (37.5cl) half bottle
Mullineux Straw Wine, Swartland, South Africa 2025 (37.5cl) half bottle
One of the great sweet wine treasures of the world, this is a stunning Chenin Blanc straw wine that contains some botrytised fruit and if you don't know what that means, it translates roughly as scrumdiddlyumptious! On the dessert wine scale it sits somewhere between a sweet oloroso and a Tokaji. Indulgently rich, yet rivetingly acidulated, it's the perfect way to round off a meal with pudding or cheese, especially a young Comté (tried and tested by us; you are welcome!). 7.5% alc. 37.5cl. Drink now-2036.
Press review:
Tim Atkin MW: “Like the Mullineux’s Granite Syrah, this stunning straw wine comes from Adi Badenhorst’s Jakkalsfontein farm on the Paardeberg. Combining natural acidity and a mind-boggling 358 grams of residual sugar, it’s a dehydrated, concentrated quintessence of Chenin Blanc, with lovely guava, honey and pawpaw flavours, a surprisingly refreshing palate and a lovely volatile lift. Drink now-2032.” 96 points
The Wine Advocate (previous vintage): “The Mullineux 2024 Swartland Straw Wine (in a 375-millilitre bottle) is lusciously concentrated yet vividly fresh, delivering marmalade, dried apricot and honeyed citrus wrapped in a glycerin-rich texture. Chenin Blanc retains remarkable brightness and verticality despite intense concentration from sun-dried grapes. Produced from old-vine Swartland fruit dried on straw mats and fermented slowly over 12 months, the wine captures what vintner Andrea Mullineux calls “harnessed sunshine” in sweet-wine form.” 97 points
