Albariño 'Sal da Terra', Rias Baixas, Galicia, Spain 2023

£29.95

If this Albariño were a thoroughbred racehorse, you couldn’t fail to be impressed by its pedigree. Its sire is Eulogio Pomares, who is primus inter pares among Galicia’s Albariño producers, but that’s only one of its bloodlines. It was conceived by Ben Henshaw, owner of the renowned Spanish wine importer, Indigo Wines, in tandem with wine writer, Jamie Goode, and Zalto glass importer, Daniel Primack. Beautifully packaged and brilliantly named (‘Sal da Terra’ meaning ‘salt of the earth’), it’s the ultimate expression of Galician Albariño from its heartland in Rias Baixas; a wine as pure as glacial water, which glides across the palate without friction, like a blade on ice, offering delicate notes of mandarin, white currant, green fig and mirabelle plum. If you can imagine eating a nectarine while sitting in a rock pool beside the Atlantic, you’re already having your first sip. 13% alc. Drink now-2030.

Press review:

The Wine Advocate:Produced with 60% grapes from Carballoso in Xil, Meaño, six kilometres from the sea at 250 metres above sea level. The vineyard was planted with 37-year-old vines on sandy granite soils; this part fermented in a 1,200-litre chestnut barrel. The remaining 40% of the volume was produced from the Francón vineyard, which also produces Eulogio's Pedraneira, and it fermented and matured in a 1,500-litre concrete vat. The blend of the two is very balanced and elegant, harmonious, clean and expressive, with some flavours reminiscent of those I found in Pedraneira. It has a fine-grained texture and finishes tasty and focused. Drink now-2031.“ 94 points
