Named after the second type of visible dawn (after ‘Astronomical Dawn’, but before ‘Civil Dawn’), Nautical Dawn is a Chenin Blanc from False Bay, where Chris says the vineyards produce “athletic grapes”. Terrific tension and with just a glimmer of the lemon compote, apple and heather honey in abeyance. I would stash this beauty away for a year or two and drink it over the following decade. 13.5% alc. Only 1 large foudre was filled in 2023. Drink 2026-2040.

"The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The juice is very lightly settled with no additions to the raw juice, wild fermentation took place in old barrels of various sizes. Fermentation lasted for about two months. The wine was kept on lees for around 12 months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further five months prior to bottling. In fact, this is only the second time I've given 100 points to a Cape white. First made as recently as 2017, although it comes from a parcel on the Rustenhof farm that was planted close to False Bay in 1978, it's a wine that takes South Africa to new heights. Alas, only 50% of normal volumes, but this is all kelp, petrichor and sea breezes, with incredible extract, a note of umami and a dense, refreshing, mineral-rich finish. Drink 2025-2035.” 100 points
