Beaumont 'Hope Marguerite' Chenin Blanc, Bot River, South Africa 2020

£29.95

Despite similar appearances, this is not to be confused with Beaumont’s regular Chenin Blanc. This is their ‘Hope Marguerite’ Chenin Blanc, sourced from two vineyards planted in the 1970s, and is a different beast altogether, with greater concentration and a lovely lick of new oak that adds warm brioche notes to the golden stone fruit flavours to give the wine extra breadth and dimension, while retaining plenty of zip thanks to its bright acidity and relatively low alcohol content. Classic, old-vine, heritage vineyard Chenin. 12.5% alc. Drink now-2030.

Press reviews:

Tim Atkin MW: “ "Very simple winemaking," says Sebastian Beaumont modestly. But he's right in a way. Less is more when the sites are as good as these two blocks, planted in 1974 and 1978. Leesy, focused and effortlessly poised, with a hint of spicy new wood, pear and patisserie flavours and thrilling acidity, minerality and palate length. 2021-2026.” 95 points

Jamie Goode: “This has some innate richness with a core of peach, lemon and green apple, but also keen acidity that balances the fruit. Nice precision with some mineral characters lurking under the fruit. Understated but really complex with a sense of precision allied to richness.” 94 points

The Wine Advocate: “Fresh, crystalline and mineral, the 2020 Hope Marguerite Chenin Blanc offers up aromas of lemon drop, peach ring and citrus blossom with a soft nutty and leesy essence. Medium-bodied, the palate shows the breadth and depth of Chenin Blanc with zesty acidity and delightful mineral tension. The wine continues to offer its secrets and complexities over the persistent and ever-evolving finish. Drink now-2032.” 91 points
