You didn’t come here for politics, I get it, you just want a nice glass of wine, but give me a short paragraph, because this wine makes me think of something that ‘progressives’ shout at anyone who dares not to toe the line. “Stay in your lane!”, they yelp, and that is the fundamental problem with identity politics, because it reduces everyone and everything into discrete categories, and if this wine were to stray onto a modern-day campus, it would probably be cancelled for cultural appropriation. “Hey, South Africa, how dare you make Albariño. That’s a hate crime against the indigenous people of Galicia. Stick to Pinotage, you colonialists!”

Thankfully, no one in the wine world thinks along those lines, and it’s great to see South Africa playing with Spanish varieties, Australia making wines from Italian grapes like Nebbiolo and Fiano, while California is having great success with Syrah and Viognier from the Rhone. This Albariño from Stellenbosch displays intense aromas of white peach and pink grapefruit following through to a vibrant palate lifted by zesty acidity, refreshing with its juicy nectarine flavours, backed by undercurrents of grapefruit pith, lemongrass and lime zest. 13.5% alc.
