Bourgogne Aligoté 'Le Grand A' David Moret, Burgundy 2024

£24.50

“More care has very obviously been lavished on this wine than on most Aligotés.” - Jancis Robinson MW

‘Le Grand A’ Aligoté is made from Aligoté grown on 60-year-old vines near Meursault. It is not your typical Aligoté, being extremely concentrated (due to the old vines) and given the royal treatment with 18 months in French oak, of which a portion is new.

One whiff and you know you are in fine company. It has gorgeous aromas, quite intense, thanks to those old vines, offering apricot kernel, warm hay, lemon verbena and a touch of sour cream. Barrel-fermentation adds weight and texture to the mouthfeel and if you can find a white Burgundy made from Chardonnay that's as good as this for £24.50, then please give us the details.

There's a thin brushstroke of top quality oak that paints a light wash of something akin to nougat or freshly toasted hazelnuts over the sappy, tangy, mouthwatering flavours that energise the palate, where you may find lime and grapefruit and snapped green beans. It's a really brilliant wine that we are thrilled has been overlooked. 12.5% alc. Drink now-2029.

Press review:

Jancis Robinson MW: “Vines in Corcelles east of Meursault. 40 hl/ha, lees stirred and aged in old oak. Actually extraordinarily honeyed! However did he do that? But it’s not cheap. It is a standout though and is very long. Drink now-2030.” 17 points
